Father Peter Preble substituted for Dick today, and was a great co-host. Father Peter is an Obama voter experiencing some buyer’s remorse. His church will, of course, be affected by the proposed change in the tax code that reduces the deduction for charitable donations.
We talked about the economy, the economy, the economy – taxes, personal responsibility, Rick Santelli’s Tea Party movement, and some local issues.

I respect Father Preble, but I wonder whether he has thought through his concern with selfishness and people being in their own bubble. With respect to selfishness, I hope Father Preble considers the possibility that it is the statist policies of Obama, Reid and Pelosi that most unleash selfishness, resentment and envy in people as folks attempt to secure their earmarks from the Pelosi-Reid Congress and have the government tax the efforts of others. Of course, there is an element of selfishness in the capitalist system, because all humans have an element of selfishness in them. But I hope Father Preble, and folks who have concerns similar to his, consider that it has been within the framework of a society that protects freedom and property rights that the rays of goodness in humans are more likely to shine through.
As far as folks being in their own bubble, I wonder whether this is “good old days” thinking. Before the Internet, people of all ages found ways to shut themselves off from society. If anything, online communities may be helping otherwise reclusive folks open up to the ideas of others, and also help folks find others throughout the world who share similar interests.
In any event, I’m glad Jane had a terrific guest for her first show without Dick Vaughan, and thankful that Jane was able to encourage Father Preble to express some reservations about the directions in which the Obama express is heading.
